A considered address in the oldest quarter of Schaffhausen
Unterstadt 15 sits on one of Schaffhausen's most characterful streets, a narrow lane that follows the lower edge of the Old Town between the Rhine waterfront and the vine-covered slopes leading up to the Munot fortress. The building reflects the layered architecture typical of this quarter — solid masonry, shuttered windows, and a sense that the walls have absorbed several centuries of Swiss urban life. The apartment itself has been fitted out with a light, contemporary touch that respects the structure rather than fighting it.

Inside, the layout is open enough to accommodate six guests without feeling crowded. Natural light moves through the rooms at different angles across the day, shifting from morning brightness on the eastern side to a warmer afternoon glow facing the street. Floors, surfaces, and furnishings have been chosen for durability and ease — this is a place designed to be lived in, not treated carefully.
The Unterstadt neighbourhood is Schaffhausen's most walkable and historically dense. Within a few minutes on foot you reach the Rhine promenade, the covered wooden bridge at Stein am Rhein road, the central market square, and the cable that carries you up to the Munot. Independent bakeries, wine bars, and specialist food shops line the connecting lanes. There is no need for a car to experience the city's core, though the main train station — with direct connections to Zurich, Basel, and Constance — is an easy fifteen-minute walk or a short tram ride.
The apartment is managed by Elevate Schweiz GmbH, a Schaffhausen-based hospitality company that handles all communication, key handover, and on-the-ground support. Guests book directly, avoiding third-party fees, and receive straightforward arrival instructions in advance. The team is reachable by message throughout the stay and responds quickly to practical questions.

You arrive at Unterstadt 15 on foot from the train station, rolling luggage over the old cobblestones as the Munot tower comes into view above the roofline. The entrance is discreet, as most doors in this quarter tend to be. Inside, the apartment is quiet — street noise softened by solid walls and double glazing. You set your bags down and the place immediately feels like somewhere you can spread out.
Morning begins with light through the eastern windows. There is a kitchen equipped for a proper breakfast, so you stop at one of the bakeries two streets over and bring back bread, butter, and something seasonal. You eat at the table with coffee and no particular schedule. The Munot is already receiving its first visitors on the hill above.
By mid-morning you are out. The Rhine is four minutes away by foot, and the riverside path runs in both directions — west toward the old waterworks, east toward the falls at Neuhausen. The Rheinfall, one of the largest waterfalls in Europe, is twenty minutes by regional train and worth the round trip for the noise alone. Back in the city, the pedestrian zone around Vordergasse and Fronwagplatz rewards slow walking. The painted facades on the guild houses and merchant buildings are specific to Schaffhausen — you will not see this concentration of oriel windows and fresco decoration anywhere else in Switzerland.
Afterward, the apartment is the right place to be. The living space is arranged for both gathering and retreat. In the evening, the streets below grow quieter as day-trippers leave and the city returns to its residents. Dinner from one of the nearby restaurants or a self-cooked meal, and then the low light of a Schaffhausen night through the shutters.

6 minutes by foot
The circular 16th-century fortress above the Old Town offers a panoramic view over Schaffhausen's rooftops and the Rhine valley. Entry is free.

4 minutes by foot
The Rhine runs directly along the edge of the Old Town. The waterfront path is level, well-maintained, and used by locals at every hour of the day.

20 minutes by regional train
Europe's largest waterfall by volume sits just outside Schaffhausen. Viewing platforms, boat trips, and a rock in the middle of the falls make it genuinely dramatic.

8 minutes by foot
The main square at the heart of Schaffhausen's pedestrian zone. Weekly markets, guild-house facades, and the best concentration of independent cafes in the city.
The path from Unterstadt up to the Munot and back takes under thirty minutes, mostly uphill through quiet lanes. At seven in the morning, you share it with dog walkers and a few commuters. The view from the tower terrace is worth every step, with the Rhine visible in both directions and the Old Town roofline spread below.
Most visitors see the Rheinfall in summer when snowmelt swells the volume. Spring brings the same rush. Autumn strips the surrounding trees and clarifies the scale of the rocks. Even a January visit, with mist and low crowds, reveals something the postcard images never show about Europe's largest waterfall by volume.
The oriel windows and exterior frescoes of Schaffhausen's merchant houses are not decorative afterthoughts. Each one was commissioned to signal wealth, guild membership, or civic standing. Walking Vordergasse with this context in mind turns a pleasant stroll into something closer to reading a very old and very public archive.
