A Generous Apartment at the Edge of the Old Town
The R Apartment Hagen occupies a well-proportioned 80-square-metre floor at Schutzengraben 24, a quiet address that sits along the former fortification line of Schaffhausen's old town. The street retains its historic character — solid stone facades, wide pavements, and a calm that feels unhurried even though the pedestrianised centre is only a few minutes on foot. The building itself has a clean, uncluttered interior: white walls, light parquet underfoot, and windows that bring in the soft northern light typical of this corner of Switzerland.

The apartment is sized generously for six guests, which makes it well suited to families, small groups of friends, or colleagues visiting the region for work or leisure. Three sleeping areas provide genuine privacy rather than the compromise of sofa beds, and the main living and dining space is wide enough that people can move around without negotiating each other. The kitchen is fully equipped for real cooking — a practical consideration when grocery shopping is so easy in the surrounding neighbourhood.
Schaffhausen is Switzerland's northernmost canton, and its city centre is one of the country's best-preserved medieval towns. From Schutzengraben you can reach the Munot fortress on foot in under ten minutes, the main Fronwagplatz market square in five, and the Rhine waterfront in roughly the same time. The proximity to the German border — Konstanz is a short drive, Zurich about 45 minutes by rail — makes the apartment a logical base for exploring a wider arc of the region. The Rhine Falls, the largest waterfall in Europe by volume, are a short bus or bike ride away.
Elevate Schweiz GmbH manages the property with a focus on straightforward, reliable hosting. Guests booking directly benefit from transparent pricing, direct communication, and flexibility that platforms do not always allow. Arrival is handled with clear instructions so that the process is calm regardless of what time your train or car arrives.
80 square metres of considered space in one of Switzerland's most intact medieval cities. Light rooms, a full kitchen, and three separate sleeping areas for up to six guests.
Fast fibre-based WiFi throughout the apartment, suitable for video calls, streaming, and remote work across multiple devices simultaneously.
Four-burner hob, oven, refrigerator, kettle, toaster, and a complete set of cookware, plates, and utensils for six people.
In-apartment washing machine for guest use. Suitable for stays of any length, particularly useful for families or guests arriving with sports or outdoor gear.
Heating available throughout the apartment for year-round comfort. Schaffhausen winters are cool and crisp — the system keeps all rooms at a consistent temperature.
Flat-screen smart TV in the living area with access to streaming platforms. Guests may log into personal accounts. HDMI input available for devices.
Hotel-quality bed linen and towels provided for all guests. Beds are made up prior to arrival. Extra sets available on request for longer stays.
Windows on multiple sides of the apartment bring in steady natural light across the day. The building's position on Schutzengraben avoids heavy street traffic.
Keybox or digital access system allows arrival at any hour. Detailed instructions provided in advance so there is no need to coordinate timing with a host on-site.
Starter supply of coffee and tea included for arrival. A kettle and cafetiere or machine are available in the kitchen for daily use.
Starter supply of hand soap, shampoo, and shower gel provided. Sufficient for initial nights; a pharmacy and supermarket are both within short walking distance.
The largest sleeping room faces the quieter side of the building. A full-size double bed, fitted wardrobe, and enough floor space to keep luggage open without it feeling cramped. Blackout-suitable window coverings included.
A second private room with a double bed and dedicated wardrobe. Sized for two adults travelling together, with access to the corridor bathroom and a window onto the building's quieter side.
The third room accommodates two guests and works well as a children's room or a separate space for a third couple. Separate from the main sleeping areas, offering additional privacy for larger groups.
The central social space of the apartment. A dining table seats all six guests, and the adjacent sitting area has a sofa and media setup. Light parquet flooring and white walls keep the atmosphere open.
A properly equipped kitchen with a four-burner hob, oven, refrigerator, and essential utensils. Designed for genuine meal preparation, not just reheating. A supermarket is a short walk from the front door.
A clean, functional bathroom serving the apartment. White tiling, good water pressure, and adequate storage for toiletries across a group stay. Additional WC facilities keep morning routines from bottlenecking.
You arrive on Schutzengraben to find the street quiet — a row of solid facades, the faint sound of a fountain somewhere close. The front door opens onto a clean stairwell and, a moment later, into an apartment that immediately feels like it has more room than you expected. Light comes in from two sides. You put down your bags and the city is already visible from the window: rooftops, a church tower, the slope of the Munot in the distance.
Mornings at the apartment tend to start slowly. The kitchen is proper — a hob, good appliances, a table wide enough for six to eat without crowding. Someone goes out to the nearby bakery and comes back with fresh rolls. Coffee is made, the day is planned loosely. The old town is close enough that a walk before the tourist groups arrive feels easy and worth doing: the painted oriel windows along Vordergasse, the covered market, the wide sweep of the Rhine at Fischerhauserstrasse.
In the afternoon, options spread out in every direction. Rhine Falls is twenty minutes by bike along the river path, or a short ride on the regional bus. The castle grounds at Laufen sit right at the falls and the viewing platforms are genuinely impressive at any water level. Alternatively, the old town repays a second, slower circuit — the Allerheiligen Museum inside the former monastery holds a serious collection and rarely feels crowded. Wine from the canton, particularly the Blauburgunder grown on the Rhine's southern slopes, is available in several shops within walking distance.
By evening, the apartment earns its size. The living area comfortably holds a group in conversation or watching something on screen, while those who want an early night can retreat without disturbing anyone. Schaffhausen's restaurants close at a civilised hour, and the walk back from dinner along the old town streets, lit gently at night, takes no more than ten minutes.

9 minutes by foot
Schaffhausen's circular Renaissance fortress rises above the Rhine with panoramic views over the city and across into Germany. Entry is free and the tower walk is worth it.

15 minutes by bike or regional bus
Europe's largest waterfall by volume. Viewing platforms at Laufen castle bring you within metres of the main cascade. Boat trips to the central rock operate in season.

5 minutes by foot
The social centre of Schaffhausen's pedestrian zone. A weekly market offers local produce, bread, and regional wine. Surrounded by painted facades and fountain sculptures.

7 minutes by foot
Set inside a former Benedictine monastery, the museum covers regional history, natural history, and fine art. The Romanesque cloister garden is open and quiet even in summer.
Schaffhausen's Vordergasse is lined with painted oriel windows that most visitors walk past quickly. A slow morning circuit, starting from the Fronwagplatz fountain and finishing at the Munot, takes less than an hour and rewards patience with details that photographs rarely capture.
Most visitors arrive in summer when the flow peaks, but the Rhine Falls in early spring — when snowmelt pushes the volume higher — or in winter's lower water levels, when the rock formations become visible, tell a different story entirely. Here is what to expect across the calendar.
The canton of Schaffhausen grows Pinot Noir on south-facing Rhine slopes that most visitors never seek out. Several small producers sell directly from their cellar doors, and the old town has two wine shops that stock the best of the local harvest without the usual tourist markup.
Check-in is from 15:00 onwards. The apartment uses a self-check-in system — keybox or digital access — so there is no need to coordinate arrival time with the host. Detailed access instructions are sent the day before arrival. If you need early check-in, please contact us in advance and we will do our best to arrange it.
Check-out is by 11:00 on the day of departure. Please ensure windows are closed, rubbish is disposed of, and the key is returned to the keybox. If you need a late check-out, reach out at least 24 hours in advance and we will check availability. Luggage storage options are available nearby at Schaffhausen train station.
The apartment accommodates up to 6 guests across three separate sleeping rooms. This includes adults and children. Infants in travel cots may be accommodated in addition to the 6-guest maximum — please mention this at the time of booking. The apartment is not suitable for events or gatherings beyond the registered guest count.
The apartment does not include a private parking space. Schaffhausen has several public parking facilities within short walking distance of Schutzengraben 24, including the Altstadt and Herrenacker car parks. Street parking is regulated in the area. The city centre is well connected by foot, bicycle, and public transport, making a car optional for most stays.
Pets are not permitted in the apartment by default. If you are travelling with a small, well-behaved pet, please contact Elevate Schweiz GmbH directly before booking to discuss whether an exception can be made. Undisclosed pets may result in additional cleaning fees or cancellation of the reservation.
